The heavyweight division is set to soon have a former world champion back competing.
The current king of the banner weight class is Oleksandr Usyk, who became undisputed champion in 2024 following a victory over Tyson Fury, before vacating the IBF belt and then claiming another win over Fury in the rematch.
The IBF title is now held by Daniel Dubois, who is keen to prove himself as the number one in the division. He beat Anthony Joshua in convincing fashion during his last contest in September, and now looks set to take on Usyk in the latest undisputed clash in July.
Due to the current mandatory situations with a number of the heavyweight belts, some of them may become scattered following the Usyk vs. Dubois fight, and one former world champion has his eyes on trying to get back into title contention.
Deontay Wilder was the former long-time WBC heavyweight champion, having held the belt for over five years and making 10 defences, defeating the likes of Luis Ortiz and Bermane Stiverne.
He lost his belt to Fury in 2020, and has struggled to return to form since then, with that Fury loss one of four defeats in his last five contests, and he was most recently stopped by Zhilei Zhang last summer.
‘The Bronze Bomber’ is now set to finally return after 12 months out when he faces Tyrrell Herndon in June, and despite many fans believing his best days are behind him, Wilder has told 78SPORTSTV that he feels he has what it takes to become world champion again.
“My grandma told me years ago I was anointed by God and she didn’t lie. Here I am, the mission is the same, I gotta get these titles man, I gotta do what I gotta do, to feel that greatness, to show the world how great I am, like they know I am. It continues, and I’m looking forward to it. I feels good to be a veteran.”
While Wilder is hoping to get back to the top of the division, one of his fellow heavyweight rivals has vowed that he will knock out ‘The Bronze Bomber’ when they finally fight.
