“I Never Really Retired”: Former Heavyweight Champion Announces He Will Return This Year

A former world heavyweight champion is gearing up for his return to the ring.

The current heavyweight landscape has been shaped by the sheer dominance of Ukrainian superstar Oleksandr Usyk, who defeated Tyson Fury in their highly anticipated rematch on December 21 to successfully defend his unified WBC, WBA and WBO titles.

The incredible resurgence of Britain’s Daniel Dubois saw the 27-year-old elevated to IBF heavyweight champion last year before he blasted out Anthony Joshua to make the first defence of his crown in September, whilst Joseph Parker and Agit Kabayel have been knocking at the door over the last 18-months as they both eagerly await their opportunities to potentially shake up the division.

Another fighter who remains set on returning to the very top of the heavyweight bracket is former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, who has not fought since suffering successive defeats to Zhilei Zhang and Joseph Parker but has confirmed he will continue on the sport.

One man who would like to be Wilder’s comeback opponent is former WBO heavyweight champion, Shannon Briggs.

Briggs, who faced the likes of Lennox Lewis, George Foreman and Vitali Klitschko during his 68 fight career, announced to Fight Hub TV that he will be making a comeback this year and would be keen on a fight against ‘The Bronze Bomber’.

“I would like to fight him, I think it would be a great fight in Alabama when he comes back. I never really retired, they just won’t fight me. I’m going to fight in March so if he wants to go, we can go.”

‘The Cannon’ has not fought since he defeated Emilio Zarate by first round knockout in 2016, although the 53-year-old has left the door open for a return to the ring with a number of potential opponents in the frame including former long-reigning unified heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko.
