Conor Benn is looking to secure his next fight and it could be in one of two weight divisions.
Last time out in April, Benn fought bitter British rival Chris Eubank Jr., up at 160lbs. Although he put on a solid showing, he lost a unanimous points decision and immediately called for the contracted rematch.
Although news emerged that second fight would go ahead this September at the same weight, which is two classes above Benn’s usual division, and with the same fight-day rehydration clause for Eubank, the contest has recently been thrown into doubt.
It could instead now take place in November, but many, including Jr’s father, think that it is unsafe for him to come down to 160 for a second time. There is a chance, it seems, the mega-money fight will be canned entirely.
If that is the case, Benn has made it clear he will drop back down to his natural 147lbs. He has called out the likes of Mario Barrios and Shakur Stevenson of late, and now two-weight world champion Devin Haney is also being mentioned.
Speaking to Ring Magazine, ‘The Dream’ was asked about his interest in a potential clash with Benn ahead of his next fight against Brian Norman Jr in November and said he ‘would love’ the match-up but wants to ensure ‘The Destroyer’ can make weight first, meaning a fight at welterweight in the interim.
“We got to see him back at 147. HIs last fight was at 160. I think they’re gonna do another fight at 160. If he comes back down to 147 yeah, but I want him to actually fight at 147 first, rather than me hoping he makes weight. But if he comes back down to 147 yeah, I would love to make that fight.”
Haney challenges Norman for the latter’s WBO Welterweight World Title, which he has held since August of 2024 and most recently defended with a statement knockout of Jin Sasaki in Tokyo. Should the American star win and become a three-weight world champion, the fight becomes much more appealing for the Brit.
