Frank Bruno has long been retired after a storied career in boxing.
Bruno remains one of Britain’s most loved sportsmen. The always honest and down-to-earth Londoner famously won a world heavyweight title at the fourth time of asking.
That historic night came against Oliver McCall at Wembley Stadium in 1995 after Bruno had previously been beaten in world title fights by Tim Witherspoon, Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis.
His last ever fight came at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and was a rematch with ‘Iron Mike’ in which he was stopped inside three rounds.
After his retirement, Bruno suffered well-documented mental health issues but following a recent interview in The Telegraph, rumours began circulating that he was ready for a potential ring return and rematch with Lewis despite being 63.
Addressing these on a social media post, he denied that was his intention.
“Afternoon so to be clear after yesterday’s paper story I am not coming back to fight Lennox Lewis. I was at an event and sat next to a gentleman who turns out is a reporter. What I did say was if I could return to boxing the fight I would like to have would be a rematch against Lennox. My eyesight is not great and my time in the ring is long finished.”
Many fans will be glad to hear Bruno will be staying retried. The same can not be said of his old foe Tyson, who made a shocking comeback last year to fight Jake Paul, a man less than half his age and in a contest that ended in a wide points loss for the former heavyweight champion of the world.
