Chris Eubank Jr. got the boxing world talking when he brought eggs to his launch press conference with Conor Benn, managing to sneak one out and crack it on his rival’s head when they came face-to-face.
It is the latest instalment of this long and strange rivalry between the pair, started of course when their fathers, Chris Sr and Nigel, fought twice in the 1990s.
Though the sporting stakes were much higher back then, the sons coming together on April 26 has gathered extreme hype since their first scheduled bout was canned due to Benn testing positive for a banned substance.
After two years of trying to clear his name, a provisional suspension by the British Boxing Board of Control and the UK Anti-Doping Agency was lifted following a National Anti-Doping Panel hearing.
While fans still wait for information as to how the banned substance ended up in Benn’s system, or whether he may argue against that entirely, a WBC investigation that concluded a ‘highly-elevated consumption of eggs’ could be the cause continues to be mentioned.
Eubank highlighted the theory with his egg stunt, and British boxing legend Frank Bruno, who branded it a ‘PR display’, has now weighed in with pun after pun.
“Morning I have been asked to comment on the Benn/Eubank PR display. What can I say? Eggsellent? That was not eggspected? What a scramble? The hype before fights has certainly changed a bit from my days but lets hope the fight in turns lives up to the eggspectations. Sorry had to whisk that in.”
