Frank Bruno has given his honest thoughts on the surprise retirement of Tyson Fury.

Fury revealed on Monday in a short post on social media that he is hanging up his gloves.

If this is to be it, he leaves the sport having had 37 fights. He won 34 of them, drew one and suffered two defeats. The draw came in his legendary trilogy with Deontay Wilder soon after a previous period away from boxing when he was dealing with issues outside of the ring. The following two fights with the American puncher were maybe Fury’s best ever, winning both by knockout.

In all he has finished 24 of his bouts early and picked up belts at British, European, Commonwealth and world level, twice becoming heavyweight champion.

His only defeats came in his last two fights against Oleksandr Usyk, the latest all time great in many eyes, who managed to become undisputed champion with his first victory over the Brit.

Posting on X, former world champion Bruno expressed understanding at ‘The Gypsy King’s decision but had concern for what Tyson will fill his time with outside of boxing.

“Tyson Fury retiring? Well there is 2 sides to the coin we all want to see the Tyson V AJ fight however you have to think of your family, your health, and do you want to go through the punishment of training again?

My concern is what will Tyson do if retired? He’s like me there is a need to keep busy. I wish him well what ever his decision and openly thank him for some great fights.”

Bruno – won the WBC Heavyweight World Title from Oliver McCall at Wembley Stadium in 1995 – has, like Fury, been open about his mental health struggles in the past.

Some fans will be hoping that Fury’s retirement is only temporary and maybe even a means of negotiating a higher purse for the fight with Anthony Joshua that the world is so keen to see.
