Frank Bruno is one of the most popular UK fighters of all time.
After a career which saw him become beloved by the British public, he won the world heavyweight title at the fourth attempt of asking when he defeated WBC champion Oliver McCall in 1995.
Prior to that, Bruno had come up short against Mike Tyson and Tim Witherspoon in world title bids, and also against domestic rival Lennox Lewis, who beat Bruno by seventh round stoppage in Cardiff in October 1993.
While he may have lost to Lewis, Bruno has revealed to Max Boxing that there is another man he wouldn’t want to get back in the ring with, and that is his former foe Tyson.
“I boxed Tyson twice and I boxed Lennox Lewis, and I would rather box Lennox Lewis five days a week than to fight a Mike Tyson. He’s awkward, short, dangerous, and when he’s fit, he’s very dangerous.”
Along with losing to ‘Iron Mike’ in a world title attempt in 1989, Bruno also lost his world heavyweight title in his first defence when facing Tyson in March 1996, suffering a third round knockout defeat,
That turned out to be Bruno’s last fight, retiring with a record of 40 wins and 5 defeats, and he explained what makes Tyson so dangerous.
“If he’s 60 percent himself when he goes in there, fit, hungry, and controlled – not controlled that when the bell goes he’s still fighting, punching the referee, punching the cornermen, biting and getting loopy – I can see him doing some damage because Tyson’s very dangerous when he’s focused.”
Tyson is currently training for his controversial comeback against Jake Paul in November, and Lennox Lewis has revealed he would be willing to face ‘Iron Mike’ again if he can get through the YouTuber.
