Frank Bruno has given his opinion on the upcoming showdown between Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois.
This fight is the biggest of the year so far and will determine, for the second time in a little over a year, the undisputed heavyweight champion.
Usyk last won that title in May 2024 when he outpointed Tyson Fury over 12 engaging rounds. That was just six years after he had also become the undisputed champion down at cruiserweight back in 2018, although he didn’t hold the title for long.
In order to honour a rematch with Fury, he had to vacate the IBF belt, which Dubois went on to pick up last June when he stopped Filip Hrgovic inside the distance. He backed that up with a knockout win over Anthony Joshua in September last year to announce himself as the most in-form man in the division.
He has not fought since then, however, so has lost some momentum after falling ill late in the day in February and having to pull out of a fight with Joseph Parker at the last minute.
Speaking to Seconds Out, Bruno was asked for his views on the much-anticipated rematch, which comes two years after Dubois was stopped by Usyk the first time they fought in August 2023.
“It’s going to be a good fight and I hope the best man wins. I hope Dubois wins the fight, it’s good for British boxing.”
Whoever does come out on top will have to keep busy to retain all four belts, with WBO and IBF mandatories Joseph Parker and Derek Chisora likely to get called for their shot before too long.
