In a world where a number of legendary heavyweights have made controversial returns to the sport, Frank Bruno has revealed exactly what could tempt him into making a comeback of his own.
The British boxing legend drew the curtain on his professional career back in 1996, just a few months after he was beaten by Mike Tyson in the 45th and final bout of his tenure at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Bruno had actually achieved his career-long dream of becoming the world heavyweight champion just one year prior to his showdown with Tyson, defeating Oliver McCall at Wembley Stadium to capture the WBC world title in a memorable night for British boxing.
After he was refused a license by the British Boxing Board of Control back in 2016, Bruno remained in retirement and decided against making a comeback to the sport, much to the relief of boxing fans around the United Kingdom.
Speaking on Clubhouse Boxing though, Bruno admitted that he would actually be tempted into making a controversial return to the sport if he was to be offered a substantial sum of money, similar to the one that Mike Tyson received to face Jake Paul last year.
“It would tempt me if I didn’t see no danger in it, you know what I mean? It would definitely tempt me because I love training. I’d love to go in a training camp for two months or one month or three months. To get ready for something like that with the money that they’re charging.”
Heavyweight great ‘Iron Mike’ made a sensational return to the sport in November of 2024, just under 20 years after his last ring appearance. The former undisputed heavyweight champion was defeated by Paul at the conclusion of their bout at the AT&T Stadium in Texas.
Fans will be hoping that the now 63-year-old Bruno will not be tempted into replicating the choices of his former rival, especially considering the dangers that come with stepping into the ring at such an age.
