Frank Bruno Eyeing Sensational Comeback Against Old Foe: “I Want To Rematch That Nasty Bit Of Work”

Former WBC heavyweight champion Frank Bruno has expressed an interest in making a return to boxing.

The 63-year-old from London, England challenged for the world heavyweight championship on three occasions before he finally captured the coveted WBC belt in a career-defining performance against Oliver McCall at Wembley Stadium in September 1995, defeating the America via unanimous decision.

Bruno fell short in world title challenges against ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson and countryman Lennox Lewis, as well as Tim Witherspoon, who defeated the Brit via eleventh round knockout to retain his WBA heavyweight crown in July 1986.

Speaking to The Telegraph about his battle with Witherspoon which took place almost 40-years-ago, Bruno disclosed how the American was a ‘nasty piece of work’ and how he would be open to facing him in a potential rematch.

“He was a nasty bit of work before he got into the ring. I don’t know where he got his information from, people would tell him this and that.

He beat me fair and square but I’d love to fight him again.”

Bruno has not fought since he was defeated by ‘Iron’ Mike in his 45th and final professional outing in March 1996 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

It was the first defence of his WBC heavyweight title, but the explosiveness of his American opponent proved to be too much as he suffered a 3rd-round knockout loss.

This wasn’t the first time the heavyweight pair had fought each other, following their 1989 showdown which Tyson had also been victorious in as he knocked Bruno out in the 5th round to keep a hold of his WBC, WBA and IBF heavyweight titles.

Bruno retired shortly after his loss to ‘Iron’ Mike on medical grounds, with doctors advising the Brit to avoid fighting again due to a reoccurring eye injury.
