As the landscape of heavyweight boxing continues to change, Queensberry’s Frank Warren has had his say on a number of the biggest names in the division.
In a recent interview with Seconds Out, Warren provided updates on the likes of Tyson Fury, Daniel Dubois and Fabio Wardley. He first shared his thoughts on the upcoming clash between Deontay Wilder and Derek Chisora which is set to take place in London on Saturday April 4.
FW: “They’re two seasoned, seasoned pros. Been there and done it as far as Deontay’s concerned, obviously world champion. For both of them, this is last chance saloon to get another crack at a big title. We use it as an adage, you know, where does the loser go? But the fact of the matter is at the age they are, where does the loser go – the winner moves on.”
Warren was then asked to give his opinion on the verbal altercation that took place between Deontay Wilder and Simon Jordan of talkSPORT earlier this week.
FW: “Well I haven’t seen it all. I heard about it yesterday. I’ve not watched it all but that’s his choice. It’s what he’s chosen to do and that’s what he’s done. That’s the nutty world we live in in boxing sometimes.”
The legendary promoter then responded to continued claims from Wilder that Fury cheated during their trilogy.
FW: “Tyson didn’t cheat. I like Deontay, yesterday it was good to see him. Tyson didn’t cheat and it’s a shame he says that.”
Ahead of Fury’s return to the ring against Arslanbek Makhmudov, Warren was asked why the heavyweight clash will be broadcast on Netflix rather than DAZN.
FW: “Well because Tyson has a deal with Netflix as far as his ‘At Home With The Fury’s’ and with his documentary he’s made and that’s where the fight’s going.”
With rumours circulating about a potential match-up between WBO Champion Wardley and Dubois, Warren revealed whether that fight could happen next.
FW: “No. I’d like to see it but that’s not done at all. There’s lots of talks going on as far as both the fighters are concerned but we’re not there with that yet.”
After it was revealed that Dubois has now reunited with trainer Don Charles after a brief spell with Tony Sims, Warren shared his thoughts on this situation.
FW: “I didn’t like the fact he left Don. I didn’t think it was a good move. But look, he’s found out himself and he’s gone back and I’m pleased for both of them. They were a good team and I’m sure they go from strength to strength.”
In a shock turn of events, Warren also seemed to confirm that unified champion Oleksandr Usyk is set to lock horns with kickboxing star Rico Verhoeven next potentially putting his belts at risk.
FW: “He’s going to have a fight against an MMA fighter. So that’ll leave him out. He may not fight or defend his title by the end of the year, and all these mandatories which most of the guys are with us, they’re not going to sit around waiting.”
