Frank Warren has given his view on the rematch between Daniel Dubois and Fabio Wardley.
These two British heavyweights served up an absolute classic when they fought earlier in May. Wardley started the maiden defence of his WBO belt well and had Dubois down twice in the first three rounds.
However, the same overhand right that had worked early on was missing as the fight went on, which allowed Dubois to establish his own jab. Although he never had Wardley down, he was well on top and delivered plenty of punishment that left the Ipswich man with a badly bloodied face and hanging on as the rounds went on.
After the doctor twice allowed the fight to continue, the referee eventually stopped the action at the start of the 11th, meaning Dubois became a two-time world champion.
Speaking to talkSPORT Boxing, Warren was asked whether or not he was surprised Wardley has triggered the rematch clause.
“I think that’s the type of guy he is, he’s a fighting man. They have the right to and they have notified us they want the rematch, so we’ll see what happens. And if it does happen sometime in the autumn, he must fancy his chances or he wouldn’t do that.
“It will be a big, big fight. It will be an exciting fight, It was brutal, it was a tough fight and an exciting fight to watch apart for the last few rounds when I thought Daniel was pulling away in the fight.”
Wardley will need plenty of time to recover from what was a bruising battle before going into what could well be another fight of the year contender, with Warren suggesting this time it could be a stadium fight.
