Carl Froch Breaks Down One Of His Most Iconic Wins: “He Took Me To The Wire”

Carl Froch had many high-profile wins in his career and has now been reflecting on one of the most iconic.

‘The Cobra’ was a sensational British super middleweight who won several world titles during his time in the squared circle. He was known for his granite chin and his refusal to ever take a backwards step, even when he was being outskilled or outfought.

Froch’s only losses came to generational great Andre Ward, and one to Mikkel Kessler, which he later avenged.

He has standout wins against the likes of Jean Pascal, Lucian Bute and Andre Dirrell on his way to two WBC belts and both the IBF and WBA titles.

His last two fights against George Groves are his best known – the first ending with a controversial stoppage win when many think the referee stepped in too early, but the second and Froch’s last ever fight saw the Nottingham man knock Groves out cold with one of the best right hands he ever threw.

Speaking on his own Froch on Fighting, however, he has reflected on his 2009 win over Jermain Taylor to retain the WBC strap in 2008.

“That was a must win fight, first defence against a proper fighter, former undisputed champion. He took me to the wire and to win that in the dying seconds of the last round, and by the way that wasn’t shown live on British television, what a disgrace, but listen, I’m getting my accolades.

“Right now, still, all these years later, than was April 2009 and I’m still smiling about it but absolutely brilliant to look back and enjoy a win like that against such a fantastic fighter as Jermain Taylor.”

Froch won the fight in the final seconds of the last round with an impressive knockout despite having been behind for much of the fight.
