Carl Froch once shared the ring with Andre Ward and has now predicted how he would have fared in a fight with the legendary Joe Calzaghe.
Ward was one of the best boxers of his generation. Although he had extended spells of inactivity due to promotional issues, he was a two-weight world champion who remained undefeated across his career in both the super middleweight and light heavyweight divisions.
Along the way, he had the beating of the likes of Froch, Mikkel Kessler and Sergey Kovalev twice, before eventually hanging up his gloves in 2017.
Welshman Calzaghe was even more decorated, reigning supreme across the same two divisions and being undefeated in 46 contests while recording wins over the likes of Chris Eubank Sr, Roy Jones Jr and Bernard Hopkins.
He holds the record for 20 defences of his super middleweight title across a 10-year period and although his career briefly overlapped with Froch’s with both men in the same division, they only ever traded words and never actually shared the ring together.
Speaking on his own Froch on Fighting channel, ‘The Cobra’ picked the American to be victorious against his old foe had they have fought in their primes.
“I always thought what would happen in a fight with you and Calzaghe and I did a little short on it and it was close, but I had you winning because I don’t see how you lose. I can’t see you losing.”
Both Ward and Calzaghe had slick skills, great defences and solid engines, and neither man was particularly known for their knockout power, so it would have likely been an intriguing fight, no matter the outcome.
