Carl Froch has explained what he thinks might happen if Conor Benn were able to get Devin Haney in the ring with him,
Right now, Benn is at a pivotal point in his career. He has just beaten Chris Eubank Jr to reverse the result of their first grudge match back in April last year.
He won on points despite being the naturally smaller man who had moved up in weight. Now he is back in his usual welterweight division and is chasing the biggest fights and world title belts.
He has already been face-to-face with Shakur Stevenson to call out the multi-weight world champion, while his preference is to fight either Rolly Romero or the winner of Mario Barrios versus Ryan Garcia next weekend.
Speaking to Coin Poker, ‘The Cobra’ was asked who he would put together if he were to organise a top fight of his own and went with Benn and three-weight world champion Haney.
“I’d probably like to see Conor Benn in with someone like Devin Haney. Because Conor Benn’s giving him some sh*t and he’s confident he could beat him. I don’t think he beats Devin Haney. I think Devin Haney’s got that experience and fast hands in that.
“I mean, you couldn’t write Conor Benn off, because he can bang a bit and he is always super fit when he gets in there. But I’d like to see that fight to see what actually happens. It is the fights that you don’t know who’s gonna win. I make Devin Haney a favorite, but not a massive, strong favorite.
“Same with Usyk against Itauma. Stuff like that really gets you excited. Unfortunately, we don’t get those kinds of fights in boxing. Because what if Conor Benn goes in there, destroys Haney, and Itauma goes in there and beats Usyk? They would be wild performances.”
Current WBO welterweight boss Haney is unbeaten in 34 contests and has been undisputed champion at lightweight as well as formerly holding the WBC super lightweight title, so it would be a serious step up for Benn, who has not yet had one world title contest.
