Carl Froch knows what it takes to win a big British rematch, and has now given his view on the second fight between Johnny Fisher and Dave Allen.
Allen is a much-loved and experienced UK big man who was thrown in at the deep end many times early in his career. He has faced fighters such as Dillian Whyte, Luis Ortiz and David Price, all of whom beat him, though he has secured wins against the likes of Lucas Browne.
He retired in 2020 but made a comeback in 2022, then again in December 2024 when he took on young British prospect Fisher.
After losing the opening rounds, Allen knocked Fisher down against the odds and looked to be on his way to victory. Fisher showed incredible grit to the win via split decision, but many fans, fighters and analysts believe Allen should have got the nod.
Initially, Allen said he didn’t want the rematch and advised his opponent not to take it, however, the pair do it all again on May 17.
Speaking on Sporting Talk ahead of the bout, former super-middleweight world champion Froch backed ‘The Romford Bull’ to get the win but considered it a close fight.
“That is a fight I’m looking forward to. I would say that Fisher will probably get the job done. But Dave Allen, don’t write him off, he’s old, not old old, but he’s got experience, he’s been in there with a lot of people that’s got good pedigree. If he takes it seriously, he could cause an upset. It’s a 50-50 fight.”
Fisher has had just 13 fights, with his best win being a first-round stoppage of Alen Babić in July 2024. A win over Allen is a must if he wants to continue to move up the levels.
