Carl Froch has given his views on the surprise exhibition fight that has been announced between Gervonta Davis and Jake Paul.
Paul is still a relative novice in the ring with just 13 fights to his name, one loss to Tommy Fury and wins against ageing stars like Mike Tyson, who was almost 60, and 39-year-old Julio César Chávez Jr.
Davis, however, has been the reigning WBA lightweight champion since 2023. A former featherweight and super featherweight ruler, he has won 30 of his 31 fights by KO, though he drew with Lamont Roach Jr. back in March last time out – a fight that deserved a rematch.
Speaking on his own Foch on Fighting, ‘The Cobra’ shared his concerns about the safety of the fight given the weight difference between the two men.
“It’s seven weight divisions, it would not be allowed. This is why it’s an exhibition. It would not be licensed in anybody’s real world of boxing. No-one would sanction it because it’s dangerous. Is there a chance that Jake Paul could clip Gervonta Davis, hurt him and knock him out? Probably not, but if he did land a big right hand swing, shooting from the hip, and connects on Davis’ chin, there’s a chance that Davis could be seriously injured by somebody that’s 5 stone heavier. He won’t be used to being his like that.”
“Gervonta Davis will be able to control the pace, control the ring, control the movement, and probably not have enough power to get Jake Paul out of there but Jake Paul will be big enough and strong enough and heavy enough to survive. I don’t even know if it will look competitive but he’ll be in there.”
Paul is around six foot one inch tall and around 200lbs, while Davis is just over five foot five and he boxes at 135lbs, which is why this one sits so uneasily with many in the boxing world. The rules of the contest are yet to be announced.
