Carl Froch has predicted how a fantasy fight between his old rivals Joe Calzaghe and Andre Ward might have transpired.
In boxing, it’s not uncommon for highly-anticipated generational matchups to never come to fruition after certain fighters retire or pursue different paths in their careers.
One such bout was a potential clash between American former world champion Andre Ward and legendary undefeated Welshman Joe Calzaghe.
Both men won world titles at super-middleweight and then moved up to do the same at light heavyweight and although their careers did overlap, Ward was still in the early stages of his journey while Calzaghe was towards the end so a bout never materialised.
Despite this, many figures within the sport have speculated on how the fantasy fight might have unfolded.
Speaking on his own Froch On Fighting channel, fellow former super-middleweight world champion Froch, who once lost to Ward, has now shared his prediction on how the contest would have played out.
“That would have been one hell of an interesting fight. Calzaghe fast hands, high work rate, slaps a little bit. Lots of fast light-handed shots. I think his hands were that badly damaged he used to use the inside of his gloves to save his hands a bit. But I don’t think them fast hands would have worked again Ward.
Ward is tricky, awkward, horrible. I’d have like to have seen Calzaghe set about Ward and beat him on points. Slap him up and get him out of there. Ward’s style is annoying but effective. He knows what to do to win, it’s not a fan favourite style. But he’s a very good fighter up close. It would have been a good fight, Ward don’t know how to lose, I think he would have beat Calzaghe. “
Ward has previously predicted a fight between Froch and Calzaghe and sided with the Welshman.
