Carl Froch retired more than a decade ago but was almost tempted back into the ring recently.
Froch is one of the most decorated British fighters of his generation. The super middleweight never shied away from a challenge and had some top-level battles with the likes of Mikkel Kessler, Jean Pascal, Lucian Bute and of course George Groves.
He twice fought Groves, winning the first by controversial stoppage, and the second with possibly the cleanest one-punch KO of his career in front of 80, 000 people at Wembley.
That was all the way back in 2014, and since then he has had plenty of beef with people in the sport, including Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury’s father, John, and also seemed keen on a contest with Jake Paul.
However, speaking to Clubhouse Boxing, Froch revealed that an old foe and an undefeated fighter was, for a while, in the frame as a comeback opponent.
“Joe Calzaghe didn’t fancy it then and he doesn’t fancy it now, does he? He was offered good money by Turki Alalshikh. He agreed the number, he agreed the fight, Calzaghe said ‘yeah, I will have some of that’.
“Turki Alalshikh offered him big bunce, I reckon it was 10 mil. He went home, thought about it, came back and phoned Turki and said ‘no, I can’t do it’.
“I never got to that point [of receiving an offer myself], I was out of the equation because he had already agreed and then disagreed.”
Calzaghe’s fine career briefly crossed over with Froch’s and they were both in the same weight category, though the Welshman later moved up to light heavyweight and won fights against Roy Jones Jr and Bernard Hopkins to become a two-weight world champion and retired undefeated in 46 contests.
