Carl Froch has been as honest as ever in his assessment of Tyson Fury‘s last fight against Mariusz Wach.
Fury sat out all of 2025 after losing twice to Oleksandr Usyk in 2024. His first comeback was against Arslan Makhmudov in April and he won a wide points decision as he works towards his big showdown with fellow Brit Anthony Joshua.
Joshua’s tune-up came in July against Kristian Prenga, an unheralded Polish fighter who shocked the world when he had Joshua down twice in round one, before then being stopped himself in round two.
In the meantime, Fury returned for a second fight of the year as he claimed a seventh round retirement win over the veteran Wach, and speaking on Froch on Fighting, ‘The Cobra’ underplayed the contest as something of a non-event, branding it ‘pointless’.
“He didn’t look like he got out of first gear. He got clipped with one right on the side of the head. People online are making a deal out of it but it’s fine.
“Tyson Fury when he knows he’s in with an easy fight, or what should be an easy fight, we saw against Ngannou, didn’t really try, he struggled, got the win.
“Then ‘AJ’ got in and got the win, and that’s not really a like-for-like comparison because you know that Tyson Fury can do a much better job against Ngannou, and ‘AJ’ then what he did with Mariusz Wach, Mariusz Wach was just moving around the ring doing nothing.
“It looked like a light sparring session. Tyson Fury didn’t get out of first gear, it was literally just a move around. It was a nothing fight. Pointless.”
Fury has a history of performing below par against lesser opposition but generally turns it on in the big fights, which is what he will be hoping to do when he finally steps into the ring against Joshua later this year in the contest which is now most likely to take place in New York City.
