Gervonta Davis looks set to miss out on his mega payday against Jake Paul after his most recent allegations of domestic abuse.
The world champion from Baltimore was set to face off with Paul in an exhibition on November 14 in Miami, Florida, however this new lawsuit – which includes accusations of choking and death threats to his ex partner – has reportedly prompted Paul’s team to actively seek out a replacement opponent.
The YouTuber-turned-fighter draws considerable interest, however has been criticised for his matchmaking, particularly becuse opponents are typically, older, smaller or trained in another discipline – or sometimes all three. Most in the sport disregarded the fight against ‘Tank’ Davis – who has a history of trouble outside the ropes – as one not to take seriously due to the extreme gulf in size between the two men.
It appears that Paul’s team will still be looking in and around the same weight for a potential opponent, however, as Chris Mannix now reports that Ryan Garcia has been sent an offer to step in and replace Davis.
Garcia and Davis clashed in 2023, with the latter winning via stoppage after an extremely financially successful event. Garcia moved up in weight and scored two build-back wins before looking to challenge Devin Haney for the super-lightweight world title before missing weight and therefore becoming ineligible for the belt.
The fight went ahead and Garcia won on the night, upsetting the odds but only for a short time – it was later revealed that he had failed doping tests and the result was overturned to a no contest. After serving a year’s ban, the 27-year-old’s comeback fight did not go to plan, losing to Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero over the distance earlier this year. He has said he is recently in talks for a rematch or to face Manny Pacquiao, however, given his past insistence that he wants to ‘hurt’ Paul, he may be tempted by this latest offer.
