Top trainer Robert Garcia has shared his thoughts on a potential rematch between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.
After years of speculation, the modern greats finally locked horns on May 2 2015 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, a spectacle that was brandished the ‘Fight of the Century’ by fans and analysts around the world.
Despite the hype that had surrounded their monumental clash, the fight itself failed to live up to its prior expectations as Mayweather coasted to a unanimous decision victory to unify the WBC, WBA and WBO world welterweight titles.
Mayweather would go on to announce his retirement from the sport two years later, just a few months after he stopped MMA fighter Conor McGregor in the tenth round of their huge crossover showdown.
As for Pacquiao, the 46-year-old made a sensational return to the ring last month after taking a four year hiatus from the sport, drawing with reigning WBC world welterweight champion Mario Barrios in a closely fought contest in Las Vegas on July 19.
Speaking to ESNEWS, Garcia admitted that he believes a rematch between Mayweather and Pacquiao would be ‘huge’, as he predicts another victory for the American.
“That would be huge … I think Floyd. Floyd’s too smart man, too good. Floyd is very healthy, he told us 6-8 years ago that his body wasn’t that strong but you know, he’s still talented, the little that he’s got left I think is enough to beat Pacquiao and a lot of young guys.”
Whilst he hasn’t fought as a professional since 2017, Mayweather has returned to the ring on a number of occasions in exhibition contests, facing the likes of Logan Paul, Aaron Chalmers and Tenshin Nasukawa to name a few.
Pacquiao has made it clear that he wants the rematch, but Mayweather has not responded publicly.
