Robert Garcia has urged Terence Crawford to avoid facing one man in particular next after he pulled off a historic win against Canelo Alvarez.

‘Bud’ Crawford wrote his name into the boxing history books as he dethroned Canelo of his undisputed super-middleweight championship at a sold out Allegiant Stadium in LAs Vegas on September 13.

The 37-year-old from Omaha put on arguably the best performance of his professional career to date as all three of the judges at ringside scored the bout 115-113, 116-112 and 115-113 in his favour.

All signs point to Crawford continuing with his career, and talk has turned to who exactly the pound-for-pound great could face next. Riyadh Season’s Turki Alalshikh, who was the key player in making this fight happen, suggested David Benavidez should he still be able to make the super-middleweight limit.

Speaking to Fight Hub TV, trainer Robert Garcia appeared to urge Crawford not to share the ring with Benavidez, who moved up to light-heavyweight last year and is now reigning WBC Champion.

“There’s no way, Crawford’s just got the biggest win in his career and one of the biggest wins in history, he doesn’t need to go out there and risk, Benavidez is too big, too big, too strong, we don’t wanna see a champion do so much and accomplish so much and then end his career with a bad choice, a bad fight that he shouldn’t take, I wouldn’t do it.”

Benavidez has emerged as one of the most promising stars in the sport in recent years, remaining unbeaten in all 30 of his bouts since making his professional debut back in 2013.

The 28-year-old from Phoenix was elevated to full champion when the title was vacated by Dmitry Bivol and is set to make the first defence of his crown later this year as he gears up to face Britain’s Anthony Yarde in Riyadh on November 22.

He has said in the past that his days at 168lbs are over, however has expressed interest in a fight with Crawford.
