Robert Garcia has worked with many of the world’s top boxers so he has plenty of advice that is worth hearing.
Garcia fought himself in the nineties, becoming IBF super-featherweight champion in ’98. He is the brother of former four-weight world champion Mikey.
The 49-year-olf has worked with fighters such as former pound-for-pound star Nonito Donaire, plus Marcos Maidana, who pushed Floyd Mayweather hard across two back-to-back fights, and Antonio Margarito, who is a former two-time welterweight champion.
More recently, Garcia linked up with British heavyweight star Anthony Joshua for one fight. It was the rematch he took against Oleksandr Usyk in 2022 immediately after losing on points to the Ukrainian the first time around.
Speaking to FightHubTV, the celebrated coach was asked how he would feel if former Joshua opponent Wladimir Klitschko were to come back and fight again, as has been rumoured he might this week.
“For me, I wouldn’t want to see that. He could be against a young hungry fighter that might hurt him. If it’s something like Tyson did then I’d be up for it if it’s an exhibition but if it’s a real fighter against somebody young, age doesn’t – it’s tough man, it’s tough.”
Daniel Dubois is one man who said he would give the former heavyweight star a shot at his IBF belt, but first, he must defend it against Joseph Parker on February 22 as part of a huge card in Saudi Arabia.
Riyadh Season’s Turki Alalshikh has also expressed a keen interest in making the Klitschko versus Tyson Fury rematch should the Brit beat Usyk this weekend.
