Gennady Golovkin is regarded by some as one of the top middleweights to have ever laced up the gloves.
Kazakhstani professional ‘GGG’ is celebrated for his extraordinary grit, precision, and iron chin ensuring he was never really been wobbled in a fight, let alone put down or stopped.
Because of this he was one of the most dominant middleweight boxers of his era and first gained worldwide attention by putting together an undefeated streak that included 23 consecutive knockouts.
Golovkin held multiple world titles including the WBA, WBC, IBF, and IBO belts and his relentless pressure made him a formidable opponent for anyone.
His trilogy of fights against Mexican star Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is the defining rivalry of his career. It ended rather controversially with one draw and two losses. ‘GGG’ has not fought since the third and final fight back in 2022.
Despite that, rumours have surfaced that he could be offered a high-profile bout with current 154 lbs champion Terence Crawford. Whilst that fight has been confirmed as not happening, talk has led to whether or not the 42-year-old fan-favourite is truly retired.
Speaking to Mayan Tiger Sports Journalist, he was asked out-right if he is done with fighting having announced a new role with the National Olympic Committee.
“No, I am not retired.
I am enjoying my life right now, my new job, being able to spend time with my family. I am in sports and I like it. But I never announced my retirement, it’s not in my nature to announce things like that.
Life is moments, if the opportunity arises, if something comes up, we might see Gennady Golovkin back in the ring again.”
It seems Golovkin is leaving the door open to a ring return but there are no firm plans yet in place.
