Gennady Golovkin Gives His Honest Assessment Of Canelo’s Power Ahead Of Terence Crawford Fight

Gennady Golovkin has summed up the punching power of former rival Canelo Alvarez ahead of his showdown with Terence Crawford.

Canelo will defend his undisputed super-middleweight championship against ‘Bud’ next Saturday night at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Golovkin and Canelo shared the ring with each other on three occasions within a five year period, providing boxing fans with one of the greatest trilogies in the history of the sport.

After their controversial first encounter in 2017 ended in a draw, Canelo defeated ‘GGG’ via unanimous decision just one year later. The third and final meeting, which took place in September 2022, saw Canelo walk away as the winner once again to put their rivalry to bed with a comprehensive victory.

Speaking about his rival, Golovkin downplayed his power, revealing that even the Mexican’s heaviest shots ‘brought no result’.

“I fought Canelo at 160 and I could say he was a faster puncher, he had faster combinations but I wouldn’t say they were power punches, knockout punches. You saw that. You saw his clean shots that brought no result.”

Golovkin is yet to make a return to the ring since suffering that defeat to the Mexican great several years ago, with rumours circulating in the last couple of months that the 43-year-old from Kazakhstan could be in line for a shock return to the sport in the near future.

As for Canelo, the 35-year-old is faced with yet another huge test next weekend as he prepares to lock horns with another generational talent in Crawford, who has set his sights on becoming the first male three-weight undisputed champion in boxing history.
