Weight drama ahead of the fight between Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn was expected. Just hours out from the main event, George Groves has given his take.
Benn came in considerably under the 160lbs limit of middleweight, leading many to feel that he will be too small on the night to compete with the bigger and more experience Eubank.
Speaking on the George Groves Boxing Club channel, the former world champion who beat Eubank back in 2018 first addressed Benn weighing in at 156.4lbs.
“You’re just telling everyone that you’ve done no cut to make this weight and you’re not big enough. You’re not big enough. You envision that Eubank has cut a load of weight, so he’s gonna be giving away at least a stone in natural weight. That’s a lot. That’s so much weight. At middleweight, to give away a stone… Essentially, if both guys are on form, the smaller guy cannot win.”
He then looked at Eubank missing the limit by a fraction.
“Here’s the spanner in the works. Eubank fails the weight and he fails it by the most pathetic of margins … He’s made a massive, massive error … Half a million dollars? … He’s got to be spitting feathers … It’s unprofessional to fail the weight, even if it is by the thinnest of margins.”
Both fighters were under the contracted rehydration clause of 170lbs, with Benn at 165 and Eubank at 169.4lbs, meaning fight night is all set.
