Conor Benn has made clear his desire to fight Shakur Stevenson, and now George Groves has weighed in with his view on the contest.
Benn is yet to win a world title, but that is very much his aim this year. Last year saw him twice fight his generational rival Chris Eubank Jr, with very different results.
The first time, he was beaten on points by the naturally bigger and more experienced fighter, while the rematch saw him knock a weight-drained Eubank down twice on his way to a unanimous points win. Since then, he has called out many different fighters.
Speaking to FightLens, Groves was musing on the fact that Benn confronted unbeaten, multi-weight world champion Stevenson in the ring after his most recent win, and assessed how a fight between the two might transpire.
“I don’t know if that is the right fight for Conor Benn any time soon. You can’t beat Shakur Stevenson with the sweet science. He’s too good for that. It’s got to be something else.
“Whether that’s just all-out aggression and tenacity and energy and firepower, maybe. That’s something that Conor Benn can bring to the table, and if anything, I think it will make for a fantastic fight. It may be a fight that Shakur takes next.”
Stevenson is a four-division champion who soundly beat Teofimo Lopez last time out to win the WBO super-lightweight title.
Benn has also said he would like to fight the winner of this weekend’s welterweight world title fight between Mario Barrios and Ryan Garcia, or else set up a contest with another strap holder in Rolly Romero.
