Former world champion George Groves has cast his mind over a potential match-up between the soon-to-return Tyson Fury and newly crowned heavyweight king Fabio Wardley.
After announcing his retirement from the sport back in January 2025, Fury has finally made the decision to return to the sport for one final run at world honours. He is a former two-time world champion who has defeated the likes of Wladimir Klitschko and Deontay Wilder twice, but also has a pair of losses to Oleksandr Usyk on his resume.
He has been in some tough fights so this year will be about seeing what he has left to offer at the top level as he approaches 40.
Speaking to Bet Ideas, Groves was asked how risky it would be for Fury to fight someone like Wardley at this stage in both men’s careers.
“Well, you think Fury would always be able to beat Fabio Wardley because he’s good at negating people’s attributes, and Fabio is a great fighter but very limited in the skillset.
“He doesn’t have that pedigree of boxing, He’s fit and he’s strong and there’s no quit in him, but you think Fury would be able to just negate it. But if he’s not in shape, if he’s way out of shape it could be a tall order for him, but write Wardley off at your peril.”
Wardley had a huge year in 2025, first knocking out Justis Huni despite being behind on the cards in many people’s eyes, and then repeating that come-from-behind trick to stop the in-form Joseph Parker last time out. He was elevated to WBO champion when Usyk vacated rather than face him, and is now looking for big name fights like Fury in 2026.
