Gervonta Davis is one of the biggest stars in the sport of boxing. Fighters who step through the ropes with him risk a defeat in brutal fashion but guarantee themselves a big payday.
After talks with fellow 135 champ Vasiliy Lomachenko fell apart when the Ukrainian pulled out, Davis is now in the market for an opponent. The latest fighter to throw his hat into the ring is one Teofimo Lopez, who told Sean Zittel he was ready now.
“Hey Tank! Give me a fight brotha! He ain’t fighting, I ain’t fighting…what’s up? I don’t like people saying I’m ducking somebody. Why do I beat him? Cause I’m the takeover, that’s why.”
‘Tank’ has been slated to fight in either November and December of this year to build on the Martin knockout. Whilst he was targeting a rematch with Isaac Cruz after the Mexican became only one if two men to take him the distance back In 2021, those plans were scuppered when Cruz lost his super-lightweight world title to Jose Valenzuela last month.
As for Lopez, he has had two unanimous decisions wins this year to defend his own belt at 140 – Jasmine Ortiz and Steve Claggett – and has most recently discussed a move up to welterweight or super-welterweight, calling out pound-for-pound star Terence Crawford.
Should ‘Tank’ Davis accept the challenge, it would be the second time he has fought in the super-lightweight ranks, the first being a win over Mario Barrios. It would also tick a match-up off the list of this current era’s top dogs – himself, Lopez, Shakur Stevenson, Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney and so on.
That said, it’s highly unlikely it happens this year.
