Gervonta Davis is one of the best talents in a stacked weight class.
‘Tank’ has knocked out all but two opponents in 30 fights, now holds the WBA World Title and can rightfully call himself one of the biggest draws in the sport of boxing.
It’s all the more impressive given the calibre of fighter currently competing at 135, both at the top of the division and coming up. The four champions – Davis, Shakur Stevenson, Vasiliy Lomachenko and Denys Berinchyk – are being chased by the likes of William Zepeda, Keyshawn Davis, Raymond Muratalla and Andy Cruz.
Speaking in an interview with Mill City Boxing, ‘Tank’s coach Kenny Ellis identified up and coming Abdullah Mason as the second best on the scene.
“I’ve been saying it for the last few years until recently [Shakur] was the second best lightweight, but I just put Abdullah Mason in second and bumped him down to third. Shakur’s still right there, but that’s my list. Everybody got their own list. My list is Tank, Abdullah Mason and Shakur.”
Asked why he has puts Mason above Stevenson, known as one of the most defensively talented boxers regardless of weight class, Ellis pointed to one thing the WBC Champion can’t boast – regular stoppages.
“He gets the job done. That’s what everybody wants to see. He don’t play with his food. It’s just a matter of time before he gets the strap.”
Mason, at 21-years-old, is 15-0 with 13 knockouts, most recently stopping Mike Ohan Jr in two rounds. The attack-minded southpaw from Ohio is backed by Bob Arum’s Top Rank promotions and is targeting titles in 2025.
