It looks like Gervonta Davis will record just one fight in 2024.
The hard-hitting 29-year-old from Baltimore was officially elevated to full WBA Lightweight World Champion as of January 2 and made his first defence of that belt in June, an emphatic stoppage of fellow southpaw Frank Martin.
Serving Martin his first loss in such devastating fashion – ‘Tank’s 28th knockout in 30 fights – whet the appetites of fans to seem more, and talks immediately started for a unification fight with IBF champ Vasiliy Lomachenko. The Ukrainian would later pull out due to a lack of motivation to fight.
Nothing came of fan demand for Davis to face WBC titlist Shakur Stevenson and he later announced he would be welcoming super-featherweight champion Lamont Roach Jr to the lightweight ranks for a defence.
The fight, set for Houston, was originally scheduled for December 14, however initial reports said it would be pushed back, perhaps to strengthen the card by linking it up with David Benavidez’ highly-anticipated light-heavyweight clash with David Morrell.
Although ‘Tank’ denied that would be the case, he has now confirmed the postponement to Dan Rafael, saying ” January I’m hearing.” Whether or not that will be alongside Benavidez remains to be seen, but it does seem likely.
Roach has a record of 25-1-1 with 10 knockout wins. He won the WBA 130 pounds world title in November last year with a win over former ‘Tank’ opponent Hector Luis Garcia.
Davis beat Roach on the amateur scene on points back in 2011.
