Gervonta Davis hasn’t taken too kindly to fans criticising his next opponent.
Davis is a generational talent and multi-weight world champion who, for many fans, has been frustratingly inactive.
He has had standout wins over the likes of Leo Santa Cruz and Ryan Garcia, who he beat by stoppage last April. He followed that up with another impressive victory, this time in the seventh round over previously unbeaten Frank Martin.
Despite strongly being linked with what would be huge unification fights against fellow lightweight world champions Vasiliy Lomachenko and Shakur Stevenson, neither has yet materialised.
Lomachenko has decided to take the rest of the year off, and Stevenson had booked in a defence of his title against Joe Cordina but had to pull out due to a hand injury.
This means WBA lightweight champion ‘Tank’ – who has won all 30 of his fights, 28 by stoppage – is now heading into a fight with super-featherweight champion Lamont Roach Jr on December 14 on PBC on Prime Video PPV in Houston, Texas. A somewhat left-field pick when there are plenty of contenders at 135.
Responding to fan on X who was criticising this fight, Davis pulled no punches.
“With that being said, now shut the f*** up. Get back to what you were doing.”
The big puncher from Baltimore has also shared other social media posts justifying the matchmaking, including one to show that Roach won’t find the additional weight an issue.
Roach has lost only one of his 27 fights and that was to Jamel Herring in 2019 when challenging for the WBO super featherweight title, but he did manage to become WBA Champion by winning a split decision against former Davis opponent Hector Luis Garcia in November 2023. He is set to challenge for Davis’ lightweight belt.
