Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia co-starred in one of the most successful boxing events of the last few years when they faced off in Las Vegas.
At a catchweight of 136 pounds, the two superstars fought in March 2023 in the main event of a cross-promotional card. Garcia rushed out and looked to make his mark early, but a calm and collected ‘Tank’ Davis capitalised and put his man down in the second.
Garcia fought a different fight from then on. When he did attempt to force the action again in the seventh round, Davis scored a sneaky body shot that saw him take a knee and fail to stand for the referee’s count.
The event drew the fifth largest gate in Vegas history and netted each man tens of millions in purses. As such, a rematch is a no-brainer further down the line, particularly since Garcia believes the weight and rehydration clause seriously hindered his performance.
Garcia is certainly keen, showing up at ‘Tank’s last fight – a knockout win over Frank Martin to defend his WBA Lightweight World Title – with a t-shirt saying “rematch me.”
Davis has now taken to social media to announce that he is in, so long as he can be guaranteed $150 million.
“Hopefully I’ll fight Ryan again. If they not on so h* s**t. I’ll tax that ass again. Tell them boys to give me 150 [million]. I’m coming. Tell them send that bag and I’m coming.”
As it stands, there are a number of obstacles on the path to a return fight. Garcia is currently serving a doping suspension for positive tests surrounding his fight with Devin Haney. He can return in April of this year.
‘Tank’ will face Lamont Roach Jr on March 1 but has announced he will retire from the sport at the end of 2025.
Finally, the weight will once again be an issue, with Garcia last competing at super-lightweight but even struggling to make that limit. ‘Tank’ has fought in that division once before, but won’t be keen on going much higher.
