The fallout from Jake Paul‘s controversial bout with Mike Tyson continues.
After an initial postponement due to seriously ill-health on 58-year-old Tyson’s part, the event took place in Texas on November 15 and was streamed live on Netflix.
Despite breaking all sorts of viewership records in the sport, as well as having a legitimate Fight of the Year contender in Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano 2 as chief support, the main event was underwhelming and sad.
Despite Tyson being proud of the performance in the aftermath, WBA Lightweight World Champion and ferocious puncher Gervonta Davis recently spoke to the media about the event and said that by participating “it tarnished Mike’s legacy.”
“Who told Mike Tyson to fight anyway? Yeah [it tarnished Mike’s legacy]. It definitely did. For some money.”
Davis – who has 28 knockouts from 30 bouts and has had elements of his fighting style compared to Tyson’s in the past – joins many in the boxing world who condemned the spectacle.
Still, it has done nothing but build Paul’s brand. The YouTuber-turned-boxer has since received all sorts of left-field fight offers from champions, including undisputed light-heavyweight ruler Artur Beterbiev, unified cruiserweight titlist Gilberto Ramirez and young heavyweight king Daniel Dubois.
What he does next remains to be seen but there is little doubt that is will be for big money in front of a big audience. As for Tyson, he has confirmed it was his last time stepping through the ropes.
