Gervonta Davis caused a huge stir when he recently announced that he plans to retire in 2025.
The American superstar has become one of the biggest names in the sport, due to his incredible knockout power and his no nonsense attitude.
He is the reigning WBA lightweight champion, having most recently defended it against Frank Martin, whilst also defeating the likes of Ryan Garcia, Leo Santa Cruz and Rolly Romero during his career.
He returns to action in March when he makes the latest defence of his belt against Lamont Roach, but that could be the beginning of the end for ‘Tank’ after his shock comments.
Davis plans to face Roach, then compete just two more times over the course of the year, before hanging up his gloves at the end of 2025.
Though he first said that he was planning to exit boxing because it was ‘trash’, a more honest ‘Tank’ has now explained to Dan Canobbio just the real reason he has made that decision, revealing that he feels he’s going to lose the fire inside of him as he becomes ‘softer and more humble.’
“I don’t want to box no more because I want to do therapy, but I feel as though if I do therapy it will lose the fire I have inside me.
“I want everything out of me where I don’t think about fighting again or even getting angry. I have two daughters, I’m wanting to be much softer and be more humble.”
‘Tank’ isn’t the first fighter over the years to announce plans for a surprise retirement, with a lot of them opting to continue in the end.
It could turn out to be different for Davis, and with one eye seemingly already on retirement, he has named the fighters he wants to take on before he quits the sport.
