Gervonta Davis continues to show support to the man he once called ‘trash’ and advised to retire.
Davis and Ryan Garcia fought in May of 2023, a body shot stoppage marking the latter’s first professional loss. He would subsequently move up in weight to 140lbs, and recently beat the WBC Champion Devin Haney, although couldn’t win the belt due to coming in overweight by 3 pounds.
Haney had branded Garcia a one-trick pony in the build-up, but that trick was the left hook that ended up putting him down on three occasions over the twelve rounds.
The first instance in round seven was classic Garcia – a lightening quick shot thrown from the waist that caught the champion off-guard. It was enough to impress fierce rival ‘Tank’ Davis, who has shared a slow-motion replay one month on from the fight with the caption: “You’ll never see this kind of left hook in MMA.”

Strangely to many, ‘Tank’ has also backed Garcia in the aftermath of the fight amidst his positive doping result. The banned substance Ostarine was detected in the 25-year-old’s system from two tests – one on the day before, and one on fight night.
Whilst the New York State Athletic Commission await the B Sample results to determine the best course of action for Garcia, ‘Tank’ has fought his corner, claiming corruption and even spiking of samples.
Many fans put this down to a long-term beef with Haney rather than a fondness for Garcia.
