Gervonta Davis is gearing up for his highly-anticipated rematch with Lamont Roach.
The two men originally met back in March, in a controversial bout that saw ‘Tank’ retain his WBA lightweight title after a majority decision draw.
The judges scored the fight 115-113 Davis and 114-114 twice, but a lot of fans felt that Roach should have been given the verdict to be crowned as a new world champion at 135lbs.
One of the reasons why many fans feel that way was due to a moment in the ninth round when ‘Tank’ voluntarily took a knee, but no knockdown was scored by the referee, something that would have swung the scorecards in Roach’s favour if a 10-8 round had been scored.
Ahead of the bout with Roach, Davis had been linked to big fights against a number of other names, but the controversy from their first battle has now led to a rematch, which is set to take place in August in Las Vegas.
Speaking about the first fight, ‘Tank’ revealed to Fight Hub TV how he scored their initial contest.
“I didn’t get the decision I wanted but we didn’t get a loss. I thought I won it with the last couple of rounds.
It’s cool, Lamont is a great fighter.”
Davis will be hoping to secure the win in August to retain his WBA lightweight title, in a division which has been blown open in recent days after the retirement of one of the reigning world champions.
Vasiliy Lomachenko has hung up the gloves after an incredible career, meaning Raymond Muratalla is likely to be elevated from interim champion to full IBF champion in the near future, potentially paving a way for a future unification opportunity for Davis.
