Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis is now on the hunt for his next opponent and with a reported November 2 date already booked in at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas the clock is ticking.
After ‘Tank’ defeated Frank Martin by eighth round knockout in June negotiations started for a clash against IBF champion Vasiliy Lomachenko. However, just when it looked like a deal would materialise, the Ukrainian pulled the plug on talks, citing a lack of motivation to return to action in 2024.
Speaking to ES NEWS about who could be next for the WBA lightweight champion, his coach Kenny Ellis made it clear on who he wants that to be – Shakur Stevenson.
“I would love to fight Shakur [next], I’ve always said that Shakur and ‘Tank’ were the best.”
A ‘Tank’ versus Stevenson contest is one of the most intriguing clash of styles in all of boxing.
Shakur is the master boxer, sticking to the old adage of hit and don’t get hit. Although his defensive first style has garnered success, having become a three-weight world champion at just 27 years of age, his less than fan-friendly recent performances have drawn criticism from those who want knockouts.
On the other hand, ‘Tank’ is content to give the early initiative to his opponents with an unwavering belief in his ability to end a fight at any moment with just one punch. The Baltimore native has amassed an incredible 28 stoppages in his 30 fights and is now one of the biggest commercial draws in the sport.
The two have been strongly linked to a fight ever since Stevenson moved up to lightweight last year, but with the WBC champion now ‘close’ to agreeing a deal to face former super-featherweight champion Joe Cordina it looks like fans might have to wait a little longer for the pair to meet in the ring.
