Terence Crawford will move up two weight classes to challenge Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez later this year, and Gervonta Davis believes he knows why.
Many in the sport believe that packing on 14 pounds to face the Mexican with one of the best chins in the business may be too tall a task, even for a man of Crawford’s skillset. However, the American has been undeterred and has managed to land the fight for this September in Las Vegas.
Speaking to FightHype about the match-up, ‘Bud’ Crawford insisted that one motivation behind it was challenging himself and making history.
“I want to challenge myself. Canelo’s a great fighter. He’s an all-time great, one of the best that came out of Mexico. I’m one of the all-time greats, I feel. Why not? Why not put it to the test? History. What do they say, big chances, big rewards. I’m looking for that big reward.”
In a recent media scrum to promote his own world title defence against Lamont Roach Jr this weekend, ‘Tank’ Davis disagreed, saying that his countryman’s incentive was purely financial.
“Crawford needs the money.”
The knockout artist from Baltimore then went on to semi break down the fight, but went off on a tangent suggesting foul play on Crawford’s part due to his affiliation with Victor Conte’s SNAC Nutrition.
“He needs the money. For sure. I’m telling you … He’s a good fighter. I would say smaller fighters are always better than bigger fighters cause they know how to move and things like that but … Didn’t he get clipped by [Yuriorkis] Gamboa? Right? How the f**k is he looking this strong over the past year? He ain’t been getting clipped or nothing. That’s that SNAC sh*t. I’m telling you. Y’all laugh.”
Crawford, who recently said in an interview that he dislikes Davis as a person, will no doubt respond in the coming days.
