Gervonta Davis looked all set to run it back with Lamont Roach Jr after a controversial first meeting in March.
Roach moved up to the lightweight division to challenge for ‘Tank’s WBA World Title. He looked to become just the third man to not be knocked out by the Baltimore native, and the first to beat him.
Though a heavy underdog, Roach put in the performance of his career so far, exchanging with the champion and convincing many he did enough to win on the cards, particularly due to Davis taking a knee in the ninth round but not being penalised with a knockdown.
When all was said and done the scorecards, reading 114-114, 115-113 and 114-114, added up to a majority draw, allowing Davis to keep hold of the title but leaving the challenge of Roach unanswered.
In the aftermath, ‘Tank’ made it clear he would take the rematch and a date in August has since been reported.
However, after a heated back and forth, including personal threats, Roach told fans that ‘Tank’ was ‘gassing fans up’ to distract from the fact that he had not yet finalised his side for the return fight. He then said the champion may can the fight entirely.
Lmao buddy know damn well ion fuck around like that he gassin yall up just to justify why he ain’t do his part of the deal yet 😴😭 he really might pull out of the fight… stay tuned

Fans have become frustrated with Davis’ inactivity over the years, fighting only once in 2024 due to legal issues but only competing on six occasions prior to that all the way back to 2020. He is recognised as one of the best talents in the sport, but for many a rematch with Roach is the crucial next step. Alternatively, he has been mentioned as part of a bizarre exhibition with Jake Paul, who currently fights at cruiserweight.
