Gervonta Davis is reportedly in negotiations for a shock fight to happen before the end of the year.
The 30-year-old from Baltimore, Maryland retained his WBA world lightweight title after his March 1 showdown with Lamont Roach Jr was declared a split decision draw.
‘Tank’ appeared to struggle with the tempo set by Roach throughout the contest, and was even forced to take a knee midway through round nine although referee Steve Willis failed to rule this as an official knockdown, practically saving Davis from being dethroned of his world title.
It has been speculated that a rematch between ‘Tank’ and Roach will now take place in August, after the original planned date of June 21 was scrapped. Despite this, Davis is said to be in discussions with a different fighter for a bout that is expected to take place nearer the end of the year.
Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Jake Paul revealed that he is currently working with Davis’ team for a potential fight this November, in what he claims will be the ‘biggest event of the year’ where fans will be the winner.
“Yeah we’re on it behind the scenes to make that happen and obviously that’s a fight where the fans are gonna win, and it’s gonna be the biggest event of the year.”
Paul makes his return to the ring against former WBC middleweight champio Julio Cesar Chavez Jr at the Honda Center in Anaheim on June 28. The 28-year-old remains set on pushing towards becoming a legitimate world champion in the near future, and victory over Chavez could put him in pole position for this.
Davis would be expected to make a considerable jump up in weight if he is to lock horns with Paul, who has spent the majority of his career boxing at the cruiserweight limit of 200lbs.
