Gennady Golovkin’s former trainer Abel Sanchez has shared his thoughts on a potential clash between Gervonta Davis and Manny Pacquiao.
It has been reported over the last few weeks that eight-division world champion Pacquiao could lock horns with WBA lightweight champion Davis at some stage in the near future, with ‘PacMan’s manager Sean Gibbons saying they are targeting a clash against either Davis or WBA welterweight champion Rolando Romero.
The 46-year-old Filipino icon made a sensational return to the ring last month when he fought to a majority decision draw against WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios, although many viewers felt Pacquiao had done enough to be declared the winner.
‘Tank’ made his most recent ring appearance back in March, fighting to a majority decision draw against fellow countryman Lamont Roach Jr. A rematch between the pair had been pencilled in to take place this month, but these plans were squandered when Davis was arrested on a domestic violence charge earlier this summer, though those charges have now been dropped.
Speaking to Boxing News, Sanchez admitted that he would ‘love to see’ a fight between Pacquiao and Davis happen next.
“Gervonta Davis [vs. Pacquiao] that’s a fight that I would love to see, Gervonta Davis is one of my favourite fighters, that would be a good fight and it’s a smaller guy so yeah. I could see that happening and it’s a draw for both guys, and I don’t think Manny would have the danger of say a ‘Boots’ or somebody like Vergil [Ortiz] or somebody at that welterweight division that’s young and a champion but the ‘Tank’ Davis fight would be an interesting fight, I would love to see that one.”
It had been rumoured that Pacquiao could face Barrios in a rematch next, although Gibbons debunked these rumours and has ruled out running it back.
