Conor Benn will have to take time out before deciding his next move following his loss to Ryan Garcia, and now George Groves has weighed in with what he thinks he should do next.
Benn made plenty of noise going into his first-ever world title fight this past weekend. However, the man in the opposite corner in Las Vegas, WBC champion Ryan Garcia, is a much more experienced fighter at this level and a more natural at the 147lbs limit, while Benn has not been down there since a fight back in April 2022.
That weight cut clearly took a lot out of him, but didn’t stop him from starting at an electric pace, running across the ring and immediately trying to land big shots on Garcia.
Garcia avoided most of them before timing his own shots and, in the second round, landed a fast right of his own, which sent Benn to the canvas and left him dazed when he got up. A few seconds later, after an unanswered barrage of punches, the referee stepped in, and the fight was over.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Groves assessed where Benn could possibly go from now.
“|s he able to go back to the drawing board and have a lesser fight, an easier fight? Maybe he’s already signed to be in the deep end each and every fight because of the money he’s been paid.
“I’m sure he would be happy to take those fights if the money is right. Has there been any chat about Eubank this week? Eubank’s in a TV series with Guy Richie now, I don’t now if he is boxing again.
“I’ve heard mumbles saying Benn might go up to 168, the only reason must be to fight Eubank again. I’m not really into that. I think that fight has been and gone.”
Benn had indeed mentioned the possibility of a trilogy with Eubank up at 168 so that neither man could claim they had been weight-drained for it, and Eubank has already made a public comment on that subject, saying, “Welcome to the ‘fighting after cutting too much weight’ club.
That seems a much more winnable fight for Benn than against welterweight peers such as Devin Haney, Teofimo Lopez and Shakur Stevenson.
