Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns had one of the most incredible fights of all time which is still fondly remembered to this day.
The two boxing legends were part of the ‘Four Kings’ with fellow icons Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran, who all went up against each other on various occasions throughout the 1980s.
The historic bout between Hagler and Hearns took place in April 1985, with Hagler putting his undisputed middleweight titles on the line against Hearns at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
Hagler had a record of 60 wins, two draws and two defeats heading into the bout, 50 of those wins coming by knockout, while Hearns was the reigning WBC light-middleweight champion and had a record of 40 wins and just one defeat, 34 of those wins by knockout.
What followed was just under eight minutes of the most non-stop action ever seen in a boxing bout, with both fighters throwing constant bombs at one another throughout the course of the contest.
Despite the entertainment on display, one issue that could have caused the fight to end without a worthy conclusion came when Hagler suffered a bad cut in the opening round, prompting the referee and the doctor to inspect it in the third round.
Then came a memorable six word message from Hagler to the doctor, which only helped to add to the iconic memory of the fight.
“I’m not missing him, am I?”
Less than two minutes into round three, Hagler then proved his comments to be true, as he landed the vital blow that earned him the knockout victory over Hearns to retain his undisputed crown.
Hagler would retire with a record of 63 wins, three defeats and two draws in 1987 after a split decision loss to Leonard, while Hearns competed for nearly another two decades, before finally hanging up the gloves with a record of 61 wins, five losses and one draw in 2006.
