Oscar De La Hoya hasn’t yet been tempted to enter the exhibition circuit or even make a late return to the pro game like some other big boxing names.
The six-weight world champion hung up the gloves in 2008 after a loss to Manny Pacquiao and focused on his promotional company, which had been set up six years prior.
Building stars like Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Ryan Garcia, De La Hoya is as close to the sport as ever, and he seems to have just as many rivalries as when he was lacing up to fight. That includes Shane Mosley, who wants to reignite their conflict two decades on from when they first met in the ring.
Speaking to FightHype, ‘Sugar’ Shane said he fancied a trilogy with De La Hoya for some time.
“I already asked him. This was before when we were friendly. He was like ‘ah nah, I don’t wanna do it.’ He thinks that he’s stopping me from getting money, but I have money already. I’m good. I don’t need to fight him to get money. I already have it Oscar. I was just tryna fight you now so I can whoop your butt again cause you’re a little b***h.”
De La Hoya and Mosley know each other well inside the ropes having fought twice during their pro campaigns. They first met in 2000 for ‘The Golden Boy’s welterweight belt, Mosley winning by split-decision after impressing in the later rounds.
De La Hoya would demand a rematch built on the feeling the cards should have been in his favour, and his wish was granted three years on. The seconds fight was called unanimously for Mosley but more controversial, with many feeling De La Hoya’s activity – albeit fading – clearly won it for him.
