Gervonta Davis retained his WBA Lightweight World Title with a draw against challenger Lamont Roach Jr this past weekend in Brooklyn, though many feel he was extremely lucky to do so.
If he had, and the three ringside judges kept the same scores for the rest of the rounds, Roach would have left the ring as champion.
Speaking to the Ring Magazine, former undisputed lightweight world champ Devin Haney praised Roach in general and said his performance should have earned him victory on the cards.
“I thought it was a good fight overall. I always knew Lamont wasn’t coming to lay down. I’ve been knowing Lamont since we were kids, we came up in the amateurs together, so I knew he was serious and coming to fight. But he did a lot better than I thought he would and I thought he won the fight, personally.”
As for the knee in the ninth ‘The Dream’ took the same stance as most in the sport.
“The no knockdown… That was unheard of. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen it with my own two eyes.”
‘Tank’ – who attributed his forcing a pause in the action to grease from his hair affecting his vision – has now called for an immediate rematch and may even be ordered to do so. As for Haney, he makes his ring return on May 2 against Jose Ramirez.
