A rising heavyweight talent is hoping to make his mark on the boxing world with his performance on the undercard of Oleksandr Usyk versus Rico Verhoeven this weekend.
Usyk defends his WBO , WBA and WBC titles against the celebrated kickboxing champion in Giza, Egypt. He is widely expected to come through unscathed, given that he is unbeaten as an amateur and a professional across the cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions.
However, Usyk likely only has a few fights left after that, so there is room for new stars to emerge and take control of the belts, with Daniel Dubois the most recent man to pick up the IBF world title.
Moses Itauma is a young fighter proving he has real quality, who is also looking to work his way towards a title soon, while an American is also looking to make a statement this weekend.
Richard Torrez Jr fights Frank Sanchez and has claimed in an interview with ProBox TV that he is unafraid of any challenge and ready to prove himself against the best.
“You know, I’m a firm believer that I’m the best in the world. I wouldn’t be boxing if I didn’t think that, so whoever they put in front of me, I accept their challenge and I go at it wholeheartedly.
“It’s an incredible opportunity and this is a great way to showcase where I’m at, Frank Sanchez is a formidable opponent, and he’s known throughout the boxing community. I think this fight is just really going to cement where I’m supposed to be and solidify that I am one of the top heavyweights.”
Torrez Jr has won all 14 of his fights so far, 12 of them by KO, and has said he would happily fight Moses Itauma should he come through with a win this weekend.
