A former Olympian who famously defeated Mike Tyson has shared his verdict on the impending exhibition clash between ‘Iron Mike’ and Floyd Mayweather.
Former undisputed heavyweight champion Tyson revealed in a post on social media last month that he would be facing five-weight world champion Mayweather in a scheduled exhibition bout in 2026, with an official date and venue yet to be revealed.
‘Iron Mike’ made a sensational return to the ring after a 20-year hiatus last November, suffering a unanimous decision defeat to YouTuber-turned-fighter Jake Paul at the conclusion of their eight round clash in Texas.
Mayweather has not fought as a professional since he defeated MMA fighter Conor McGregor in their crossover showdown back in August 2017, although the 48-year-old from Michigan has returned to the ring on a number of occasions in exhibition clashes against the likes of Logan Paul and Tenshin Nasukawa.
Speaking to CoinPoker, retired Irish heavyweight Kevin McBride, who defeated Tyson back in 2005 to send the American into retirement, has shared his thoughts on the controversial match-up between his former rival and Mayweather.
“If Mike Tyson lands one punch on Floyd Mayweather’s chin he’ll be sleeping like a baby for a week … I think there is a good chance Floyd Mayweather watched the Jake Paul fight and thought he still has the legs to dance around Mike Tyson for a few rounds … Mayweather will want the biggest and most padded gloves in boxing history to take the edge off Tyson’s power, a ring bigger than a town square to run from Tyson in, and two-minute rounds … That’s the only way he survives getting slaughtered. People forget, Tyson might be older, but power’s the last thing to go.”
Whilst ‘Iron Mike’ had been urged to go back into retirement following his controversial bout with Paul last November, the 59-year-old appeared to hint at a potential return to the ring once again, which now looks set to come against countryman Mayweather next.
