A former long-reigning WBC heavyweight champion is gearing up for his return to the sport.
It has been almost one year since Deontay Wilder was brutally knocked out by Zhilei Zhang in the fifth round of their bout in Riyadh last June, but the 39-year-old from Alabama is now preparing to lace up the gloves once again.
‘The Bronze Bomber’ had held the WBC world heavyweight for five years, before he suffered consecutive defeats to Tyson Fury in 2020 and 2021 respectively, after they fought to a split decision draw in the first of three fights in December 2018.
There have been numerous calls for Wilder to walk away from the sport, although the 39-year-old appears to have other plans as he vows to fight on, despite suffering losses in four of his last five outings.
Speaking to 78SPORTSTV, an upbeat Wilder appeared to set out his long term goals as he vows to ‘have a lot of fun’ when he makes his return to the ring in the upcoming months.
“This is what I’m doing this time around now, I got the same mission and the goals. I’m here to have a lot of fun, I’m here to have a good time for a long time. So you know here we are, this is the time to have some fun man along the way and I can’t wait.
Here I am, the mission is the same, I gotta get these titles man, I gotta do what I gotta do, to feel that greatness, to show the world how great I am, like they know I am. It continues, and I’m looking forward to it. I feels good to be a veteran.”
‘The Bronze Bomber’ is pencilled in to face Tyrrell Herndon in a heavyweight showdown at the Charles Kock Arena in Wichita on June 27.
